DIAMANT ROSE – HIS STORY
Pink diamonds are rare gemstones that are obtained through a particular geological phenomenon. However, due to their rarity, some diamonds are treated to obtain this color, which can sometimes make it difficult to differentiate them from naturally formed diamonds. To avoid this confusion, diamond manufacturers specify the origin of the color in the gem’s certificate. The Argyle mine in Australia is the world’s leading supplier of Pink diamonds, but these account for less than 1% of total production. Other small deposits are found in Brazil, Canada, Russia and South Africa.
.
The Argyle mine is located in Barramundi Gap, which is considered sacred land for the natives. According to local legend, the shiny scales of barramundi, a type of fish, are said to have become Pink diamonds. The women of the Gija tribe hunted barramundi in the area, but the fish hid in a cave. The women thought they were gone, but the barramundi managed to escape by leaPing over the women, losing their scales in the water and on the ground. These scales became sparkling Pink diamonds. The Gija say that the fish finally managed to escape into the Cattle Creek, where the scales turned into large white rocks. According to this legend, this is how the white rocks of Barramundi Gap were formed.
The Pink diamond known as “Grand Condé” is not famous for its weight, which is just over 9 carats, and ranks only 20th on the list of most famous Pink diamonds. However, the stone has become legendary for the intrigue and stories that surround it. It comes from the historic Kollur mines in southern India and was presented to Louis XIV by the French explorer Jean Baptiste Tavernier. According to the story, Louis XIV presented the diamond to Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, as a reward for his military victories between 1660 and 1675. The stone then entered the Chantilly collections. The diamond was not, however, present in the inventory of the prince’s inheritance and was found in the archives of the Chantilly inventory in 1713.
After decades of absence, the diamond reappeared in 1830 on the death of the fifth descendant of the Prince de Condé. It was then bequeathed to the Institut de France by the Duc d’Aumale, the last owner of the Château de Chantilly, who had no heirs. In 1926, the château was burglarized and the Grand Condé was stolen along with other jewels. The stone was eventually recovered with the help of third parties, and the thieves were arrested. The original jewel is kept in the Château de Chantilly, but a faithful replica is on display at the Musée de Chantilly. DesPite his low profile, the Grand Condé became legendary thanks to his story full of twists and turns in the French crown.
The Princie Pink diamond is a 34.54-carat gemstone from the Golconde mines in India, dating back three centuries. Jewelers Van Cleef and Arpels bought it from the royal family of Hyderabad in 1960 and named it after the son of Sita Devi, a prince known for his extravagant lifestyle.
The Graff Vivid Pink is a 24.78-carat rectangular vivid Pink diamond, classified as “refined vivid Pink” by the Gemological Institute of America. Laurence Graff, also known as the “King of Bling”, bought it for 38.7 million euros and incorporated it into a luxury ring.
The Pink Star, also known as the Steinmetz Pink, is the largest known Pink diamond stone, with a weight of over 59 carats and a color intensity classified as “vivid Pink” by the Gemological Institute of America. In 2014, Isaac Wolf bought it for 60.7 million euros, but was unable to pay the full amount, which is now considered the stone’s estimated value.
ROSE DIAMOND – ITS ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION
Pink diamonds are considered extremely rare gemstones, with only one Pink diamond for every 100,000 stones mined. Their rarity is due in part to the difficulty of their formation, which involves extreme temperature and pressure conditions. Pink diamonds are classified according to the intensity of their color, which can vary from Fancy Intense to Fancy Vivid. The color of the stone is a key factor determining its value, with more intense color driving a higher price. Although there is as yet no consensus on the origin of a diamond’s Pink color, it appears to be due to a combination of factors linked to the crystallization of the stone. The rarity of Pink diamonds means that polishing them is more difficult than polishing white diamonds, requiring up to four times more working time. Pink diamonds have seen an increase in value in recent years, with auctions reaching record prices.
Pink diamonds are particularly rare and precious, attracting attention at auctions held by renowned auction houses such as Sotheby’s or Christie’s. The price of these Pink-colored stones has soared in recent years, with record sales such as the Vivid Pink, sold for over $10.7 million in 2009, the Graff Pink, sold for $46 million in 2012, and the Fancy Vivid, sold for $17.78 million in 2014. Pink diamonds are highly prized due to their rarity, and are considered good investments due to their ever-increasing value.
It is possible to artificially alter the color of Pink diamonds to make them more intense due to their rarity, but such manipulations must be mentioned in the appraisal report when they are sold. Natural Pink diamonds have a higher value than those that have undergone treatments.
Famous Pink diamonds include Fancy Vivid Pink, said to have belonged to Princess Mathilde, niece of Napoleon I, and extracted from the Golconde mine in India. Graff Pink, whose origins are unclear, first appeared in the 1950s. The Princie diamond also comes from the Golconde mine in India and is considered the largest diamond ever.
