PIERRE ZOÏSITE – ITS HISTORY

Zoïsite stone was discovered relatively recently in history. It was found in the 18th century by an Austrian naturalist and mineralogist named Sigmund Zois, Baron von Edelstein, who amassed a fortune in the iron trade in Ljubljana, the current caPital of Slovenia. A keen geologist, Zois owned mines and collected minerals. His collection is now on display at the Natural History Museum of Slovenia. He sent samples of stones he had collected in Carinthia (on the border between Austria and Slovenia) to Abraham Gottlob Werner, a German mineralogist and geologist. The latter described the zoïsite stone and gave it its name in homage to Sigmund Zois.

ZOISITE STONE – ITS ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION

Zoïsite stone exists in various forms, each with a different appearance. Anyolite, also known as ruby-zoisite, is a natural combination of ruby and zoïsite that has a green and black color unique to zoïsite, as well as Pink and red dots from ruby. This stone is mainly used in jewelry or carved into ornamental or religious objects. It was discovered in Tanzania in 1954 and its name derives from the Masai word “anyoli” meaning “green”.

Tanzanite is the best-known variety of zoïsite, discovered in Tanzania in 1967. Although it is not recognized as a distinct mineral by the International Commission of Mineralogy, it is prized for its blue color, which can veer towards violet.

Thulite is a variety of zoïsite with a soft Pink color due to the presence of manganese, often veined with white or deeper Pink. This color is the rarest and most sought-after. It was named after the mythical island of Thule, corresponding to present-day Norway.

Other varieties of zoïsite stone also exist, with different hues such as colorless, orange-brown, green, Pink or black, used for decorative purposes.

At a geological level, zoïsite belongs to the silicate group and can yield striated crystals of various sizes, with a moderate hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Zoïsite deposits are found in several countries such as Belgium, France, Austria (where it was discovered), Canada, Pakistan, Namibia, Kenya and Tanzania, and the color differs in each deposit depending on the minerals associated with the zoïsite.
