Vivianite takes its name from John Henry Vivian, a 19th-century British politician who discovered it. Vivian was involved in the copper trade and owned his own mines, and it was in one of these, located in Cornwall, England, that the crystal was first identified. The matte, colorless prisms extracted from the earth produce green, blue and even black reflections on contact with air, provided there is sufficient exposure to oxygen.
Although the discovery of Vivianite is relatively recent, its use dates back to ancient Greece, between the 4th and 5th centuries BC, where it was ground to produce a bluish Pigment.
