PIERRE SILLIMANITE – HIS HISTORY
Norman Levi Bowen, an American mineralogist, was the first to describe Sillimanite, a mineral named after the famous chemist and mineralogist Benjamin Silliman. The mineral is also known as “Fribrolite”, because of its pearly, fibrous appearance, or “Bournonite”, after the French crystallographer Jacques Louis de Bournon. It is sometimes referred to as “Bucholzite” in reference to the German chemist Bucholtz, or as Monroelite in connection with the town of Monroe in New York State, USA, although it is less common under these appellations.
SILLIMANITE STONE – ITS ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION
Sillimanite stone belongs to the group of anhydrous alumina silicates, along with kyanite and andalusite. This group also includes several other rocks such as garnet, biotite and quartz. Sillimanite is a subnesosilicate whose crystal lattice is formed by AlO6 octahedra with common edges, independent [SiO4]4- tetrahedra and AlO4 tetrahedra. Symmetry is orthorhombic. This metamorphic mineral occurs in alumina-rich schists and gneisses at very high temperatures. Although relatively rare on the market, sillimanite deposits can be found in many parts of the world, including the USA, Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, Czechoslovakia, Italy and Germany. Trioxidized iron can also partially substitute for aluminum silicate in the chemical formula of sillimanite, which can be written [SiO4]Al2O or, exhausting Al coordination, [SiO4]Al4Al6O.
In deposits, Sillimanite is usually present as long, thin rods grouped in sheaves and showing indistinct terminations. Its other name, fibrolite, is well-suited to its composition of fine, entangled fibers giving the whole a compact appearance. The stones are often studded with whitish spots and can vary in shades of gray, brown, yellow or green.
Sillimanite is not only rare, but also difficult to identify and cut. Its characteristics make it highly prized and sought after by collectors, who consider it an “exotic” stone. It is particularly well suited to cabochon cutting, but when faceted, up to 50% of the raw material can be lost, limiting the maximum size of the final Piece. Transparent crystals with a vitreous luster can be faceted to produce gemstones, but they are extremely rare.
Some Sillimanites can exhibit a chatoyance phenomenon, characterized by a cat’s eye in the form of a vertical band of light. This band of light materializes on the surface of these minerals, recalling the shape of a cat’s eye. The color of Sillimanite can change depending on the light: sunlight produces different tones to those obtained using polarized light.

WHERE DOES THE NAME SILLIMANITE COME FROM?
The name “sillimanite” was given in honor of American chemist and geologist Benjamin Silliman Jr. (1816-1885), who was one of the first scientists to study this stone. Sillimanite was first discovered in the United States in the state of Connecticut, where Silliman carried out studies on the stone and published an article on it in 1850. Since then, the stone has been found in other parts of the world, including India, Australia and China.
