PIERRE CAVANSITE – HIS HISTORY
Cavansite stone is characterized by an easily memorable chemical composition. Indeed, its name derives from the contraction of the terms calcium, vanadium and silicon, represented respectively by the syllables “ca”, “van” and “site”. The rock has been discovered in a number of countries, including India, New Zealand and Brazil, but it was in the USA, in the state of Oregon, that a couple hiking found it for the first time in 1960.
.
Seven years later, mineralogists Lloyd Staples, Howard Evans and James Lindsay officially described the stone, based on previously discovered type specimens. The first samples extracted from the Charles W. Chapman quarry are currently on display at the Washington Museum of Natural History.
CAVANSITE STONE – ITS ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION
Cavansite is a rare stone usually found in small formations in basalt and tuff cavities called vacuoles, making it difficult to mine. The finest specimens come from India, particularly from the Wagholi quarry, and are often found on zeolites, especially stilbite. What sets this stone apart from other minerals is its blue lustre, which comes from vanadium, and comes in shades of light, dark and greenish blue. Photographs highlight the beauty of its transparency and color. Its density is between 2.21 and 2.31, making it moderately heavy, but it is brittle as it is rated 3-4 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Cavansite is often associated with pentagonite, with which it shares the same chemical formula: Ca(V4+O)Si4O10,4H20. Both minerals belong to the silicate family and the phyllosilicate subgroup. This is a case of polymorphism, and it is common practice to group the two minerals together under the name “cavansite-pentagonite”. However, cavansite crystallizes differently from pentagonite. Whereas pentagonite is sPiny and takes the form of five airy branches, cavansite is spherical and consists of crystal pompons packed close together. In the photo, we can see that cavansite’s rounded appearance contrasts with pentagonite’s blade-like branches. What’s more, cavansite crystallizes below 300 degrees, unlike pentagonite, which requires higher temperatures.
