PIERRE GLAUCOPHANE – HIS HISTORY

In 1845, German mineralogist Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann, famous for his work on minerals, was the first to describe glaucophane. At the time, he was Professor of Mineralogy and Technology at the University of Göttingen in Germany, and had published more than ten works on the subject. This rare mineral takes its name from the Latin glaucus, meaning pale green, pale blue or gray, and phanein, meaning “to shine”.

There are several major glaucophane deposits around the world, each with different shades of color ranging from dark gray to black, bluish gray and lavender blue. These minerals are small in size and can have a matte, glassy or slightly pearly surface on the cleavage planes.
