FELDSPATH – HIS STORY

The minerals known as “Feldspar stone” actually belong to a family of minerals with several members. This family is divided into two subfamilies, the plagioclases and the alkalines, which share a crystalline structure but differ in terms of formation and elements. Feldspars are composed of small layers of different materials and are the most common minerals in the earth’s crust. Several stones used in lithotherapy belong to the Feldspar family, including labradorite, Oregon sunstone, sunstone, moonstones, andesine, orthoclase and amazonite. FELDSPATH STONE – ITS ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION

Feldspar stones are minerals of the tectosilicate family, composed mainly of sodium, calcium and potassium aluminosilicate. This family is made up of several varieties, such as microcline (potassic) and anorthite (calcic). The two subfamilies, plagioclases and alkalines, have distinct optical properties, alkalines being generally translucent with a Pink to whitish hue due to their high alkali content (Na+ and K+), while plagioclases are characterized by the absence of potassium and the presence of calcium. Feldspars are the most common minerals in the earth’s crust, with a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. They can create more acidic stones, such as granites, trachytes, rhyolites and syenites, by combining alkali with other minerals. Plagioclases can form diorites, tonalites, syenites and gabbros. In microlithics, basalts and andesites are common. Alkalis are sodi-potassic and miscible at high temperatures, but only partially so at room temperature. Sodium or potassium fragments can be seen with the naked eye or in a photograph.

It has a shiny appearance and a flaky texture. It can easily be broken with a hammer due to a small inclusion, and is often composed of regular fragments with four perpendicular faces and two duller obliques. The obliques can scratch steel and glass, unlike the regular fragments. Feldspar stone is responsible for the formation of eruptive rocks such as granite and gneiss. It contains carbonic acid thanks to atmospheric pressure, which can produce clay, lime and soda over time, creating granitic rocks. The various stones in the Feldspar family are distinguished by the different bases present in their formation.

Orthoclase is formed from potash and includes varieties such as adularia, which is limPid and pearly, and amazonite, which is green in color. Sunstone is adventitious because of the small iron lamellae interspersed throughout its mass. Albite is generally of an ordinary white color and is composed of soda ash, while anorthite is created from lime and is the heaviest of the family, capable of providing limestone when it decomposes. Labradorite is composed of both soda and lime, and plays an important role in the formation of eruptive rocks, notably basalts. Petro-silex also belongs to the family, as do oligoclase, which can be found in meteorites, green jade, sanidine, prized in jewelry, and kaolin, used to make porcelain and gems. Other stones such as pumice, retinite, moonstone, perlite, microcline and obsidian also belong to this family, as do the feldspathoids that have broken away in modern eruptions. Leucine, easily found in the lavas of Vesuvius, is composed of alumina silicate and potash, while lazulite, which can take on different hues, is mainly formed from soda ash and alumina.
