PIERRE ENSTATITE – HIS HISTORY

The Greek word “enstates” means “adversary”, from which the enstatite stone takes its name. It was first described in 1855 by German mineralogist Gustav Adolf Kenngott, and is characterized by its infusibility, i.e. its resistance to fire. This quality also led to its recognition by the IMA (International Mineralogical Association). Enstatite has been around since antiquity, and has been found on archaeological sites in the form of Egyptian scarab sculptures.

Martin Heinrich Klaproth, a German chemist, apothecary and mineralogist, discovered bronze around 1807. He wrote a detailed article about it that was published in Gehlens Journal (New General Journal of Chemistry). The article was so well received that another variety, called bronzite, appeared shortly afterwards. This new variety owes its name to its bronze-like color. The French were quick to jump on the bandwagon, translating Klaproth’s findings into their own language in the December 132 issue of Journal des Mines. Although this name is commonly used, it has never been recognized by the IMA. The term refers to a variety that lies between enstatite and another species in the same family, called hypersthene.

It is commonly described as a type of partially transformed iron enstatite, due to its unique bronze-like coloration that differentiates it from others. Enstatite samples have even been discovered on the Moon, notably at the Apollo 15 lunar landing site, and on certain types of stony meteorites such as chondrites and achondrites. In January 2004, a probe launched by NASA in 1999 on the Stardust mission also collected samples of enstatite as it flew over the hair of comet Wild2.

The main component of asteroids in the inner part of the asteroid belt, located between the orbits of Mars and JuPiter, is this mineral. It is one of the few minerals that can be found on other planets, stars and celestial bodies outside our solar system.
