In 1806, René Just Hauy, a mineralogist, first named a group of minerals “apophyllite”, derived from the Greek word “apophyllos” meaning “which disintegrates into lamellae”, because when heated, rubbed or exposed to acid, this stone dries out and separates into sheets.
