PIERRE WOLFRAM – HIS HISTORY

There are several versions concerning the discovery of the wolfram stone. Some attribute the first sighting of this stone to Peter Woulfe, an Irish chemist and mineralogist, who in 1779 is said to have detected the existence of a chemical compound still unknown at the time, tungsten. Others claim that Carl Wilhelm Scheele, a Swedish chemist and pharmacist, discovered it in 1781. Finally, it is often reported that the Spanish brothers Fausto and Juan José de Elhúyar discovered tungsten in 1783 while observing a wolframite, and that this discovery was reported to the Toulouse Academy of Sciences on March 4, 1784. This discovery is commonly attributed to Elhúyar’s brothers, who called tungsten heavy stone because of one of its characteristics.

Tungsten is present in wolframite, but also in scheelite, a stone named after the chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele who first described it. The main deposits are in North America (Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, California, North Carolina) and China, although deposits in Portugal and Bolivia offer the finest specimens.

Ferberites feature spectacular lamellar crystals that can reach over 20 cm, notably in Portugal, the Czech Republic, South Korea and Bolivia. Hübnerites are also very impressive, with elongated tabular crystals easily reaching 15 cm. They are often reddish in color and found mainly in Latin America, notably Peru.

In France, there are a few ferberite deposits at Montbelleux (Ile-et-Vilaine), Leucamp (Cantal) and Puy-les-Vignes (Haute-Vienne). The kaolin quarries at Échassières (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) also offer attractive centimetric crystals of hübnerite.
