PIERRE CHRYSANTHÈME – HIS HISTORY

Chrysanthemum rock, better known as “Xenotime”, is a precious mineral of great importance in Japanese and Asian culture. It is valued primarily for its ornamental properties. The age of this stone is estimated at around 250 million years. It was first discovered in Norway by Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius in 1832. Initially, it was named “Kenotime”. However, following an error in the transcription of its name, it became known as “Xenotime”.This mineral is generally found in river beds.

This stone is multicolored, coming in yellow brown, red brown, gray, green and red. It is a semi-rigid rock that is either opaque or transparent with a veiled luster. Although delicate, xenotime can easily be scratched with a knife blade or slice.

The name chrysanthemum stone is derived from its Japanese nickname: kiku-ishi. The stone owes its shape to a high concentration of calcite within it. They generally measure 5 to 8 cm in diameter, but can reach 50 cm. Chrysanthemum stones are highly prized by sculptors in Japan and China for their artistic value. Chrysanthemums are important in Japanese culture, representing blossoming, hapPiness and longevity. Modelled chrysanthemums enable artists to incorporate these important cultural values into their work.
